Vinos en Vos Baja: Carlos Vaz

Sep 06, 2024

During my last trip to Rioja, I was lucky to spend a couple of days with Carlos Vaz. I posted on social media about the wines and ensured you all to ‘Remember the name!’.
Since then he’s picked up a few accolades…
He was named Young Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin, who commended his work with old vine Garnacha for it’s exceptional finesse and elegance.

Vinos en Voz Baja is a boutique winery in the historic wine region of Rioja Oriental, specifically in the village of Aldeanueva de Ebro.

I visited them on the 13th November last year, was typically 2 hours late, but that wasn't a problem for Carlos who welcomed us with open arms and a warm smile.

That evening we tasted through the range in his very cool winery/tasting room. The wines were beautiful, they all have an incredible elegance, sense of place and a story to tell, which is not common in most of Rioja Oriental... a joy.

The next day we spent time in the vineyards, Carlos attention to detail and correct viticulture was second to none. We even had a bit of a lesson on how to prune correctly, an experience I will never forget, being shouted at every time I got near a vine!

The wines here are different to anything else I had tasted from this part of Rioja and it gives me a huge pleasure to recieve our first parcel of wines from Carlos.

Focused, terrior driven, low intervention wonders that I’ll be tasting through all weekend, so should you…

The Wines!

Costumbres Blanco

Emerges as a youthful and vibrant wine, perfectly suited for those in pursuit of a delicate and subtly aromatic tipple. On the nose, it unfurls scents reminiscent of white fruits such as pear, complemented by a citrus zest and underpinned by hints of anise and tarragon. Upon tasting, it reveals a pleasing texture, striking a harmonious balance between body and acidity, rendering it effortlessly quaffable and enjoyable at any given time.
